Every year, there are thousands of visits made to Dane County emergency departments and urgent care centers for dental pain. This equates to total costs of more than $2.5 million. This is an expensive and inefficient use of resources that only provides pain relief, but not definitive treatment. Those who lack access to dental care often return to these departments because they are only getting their symptoms addressed, but not the underlying oral health problem.
Madison Dental Initiative, with the help of Dane County Public Health, has implemented an ER/UCC protocol in which our contact information is provided to patients accessing emergency rooms for oral-health-related pain. In 2016, MDI received 819 emergency callers. Our goal is to continue funding a care coordinator who can direct patients to the appropriate clinic, and not emergency departments, to receive their dental treatment.
