Originally from Michigan, Curtis graduated with his Bachelor’s in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. In 2011, he moved to Madison where he started volunteering his time at Madison Dental Initiative. It did not take long before he was hooked—he discovered his love for dentistry and helping those most in-need. In 2013, Curtis was hired by one of MDI’s volunteer dentists, Dr. David Besley, to work in his new practice as a clinic manager and assistant. In 2015, Curtis was thrilled to be offered a position at Madison Dental Initiative as clinic manager and care coordinator, putting his skills to use to reduce inefficiencies and expand the volunteer base. Around this same time, Curtis decided to return to school to pursues a Master’s in Public Health, and in 2016, he graduated from A.T. Still University.
Curtis has become passionate about oral health issues and access to care and has been able to utilize his education and skills gained from his MPH. In fact, he was an integral part of implementing Dane County’s first Dental Care Coordinator initiative to reduce the burden of oral-health related visits to local emergency departments and urgent care centers. He is humbled after having witnessed firsthand the access to care issues in a community dental clinic and often tells people, “MDI has changed me more than I have changed the organization.”
In his spare time, Curtis enjoys cooking, reading, playing tennis, musical theatre, and travelling as much as possible.
